History

Northern Shield Legal and Immigration Services (NSLIS) was founded by Neil Supriyo. Mister Supriyo is a long standing member of the community serving Torontonians and Canadians since 2001.

Equity Conference: At Ryerson University (now called The Metropolitan University), Mr Supriyo was instrumental in putting on the Ryerson University Equity Conference in 2003 which brought together university administrators, union leaders, student leaders, the ombudsperson’s office, faculty, and staff to create this one of a kind conference in 2003. There were over 200 student delegates at that conference. It changed things at TMU and was ahead of its time.

Part-Time Student Justice: While at TMU Neil noticed that there was an unfair way in which courses were being counted for part-time students verses their full-time counterparts. This unfair way of counting courses benefited full-time students with regards to meeting O.S.A.P requirements while penalizing part-time students. Part-time students are generally mature students who have jobs and families and so they did not notice the unfair method of accounting for courses in the summertime. Neil worked with the university administration over a period of time to identify and correct this error which affected O.S.A.P. Part-time students were finally being treated fairly and equitably and getting access to funding they needed for studies thanks to Neil’s efforts.

Immigrant Advocate: Neil has been an advocate for new immigrants in Canada being an immigrant himself. He understands the challenges of coming to resettle in a new country. He worked on the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition program at TMU. This program helps new immigrants identify their skills and allows them to gain credit for previous education and work experience and in some cases shortening the length of time they need to spend in Canadian universities and Colleges to upgrade their skills. Neil’s work in this area paved the way for thousands of immigrants today to get their education assessed and get back to working at the level close to their home country.

Neil Supriyo has indeed left indelible footprints on the landscape of Canada over the last two decades. Now in his capacity as a paralegal and immigrant consultant, he is going to bring all of his passion and energy to your case.
