Canada’s Immigrants & Citizenship

Why Immigrants Not Seeking Citizenship

Those who come to Canada today are looking differently. Canada has a wonderful global reputation. Canada was once a legacy country where immigrants from all over the world desired to come and create a new life and embrace Canadian culture. Ordinary working class people came with the hope for a wonderful and prosperous future in Canada.

According to the reported Statistics Canada data, we can see that in 2001, around 75% of immigrants became Canadian citizens within 10 years. By 2021, that number had plummeted to just 46%. That’s less than half of the immigrants deciding to become citizens.

Getting Canadian Citizen Next Logical Step

When an immigrant came to Canada, their pathway to making Canada their permanent “forever home” was getting Canadian citizenship. It is not a difficult thing and it was a joy to achieve something to precious to an immigrant who worked hard in Canada.

Why The Decline in Immigrants to Citizens

While the news story did not state specifically the reasons, some potential ideas were given which we can consider.

  • Standard of Living Drop: Every new immigrant knows that they have to work hard in their new country to achieve success. But some new immigrants to Canada already had an established life back in their native country so in many ways coming to Canada was taking a step down in lifestyle.
  • People are Disenfranchised: It could be that some immigrants become disenfranchised about the amount of hard work. The people who came in the 1980s or 1990s didn’t mind working hard, and long hours to survive. Remember back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s there was talk about Canada having the most educated taxi-drivers in the world? Doctors, lawyers, end engineers resorted to driving taxis in order to survive. Today, the younger generation simply won’t tolerate that and don’t want to be “stuck” just surviving in a country.
  • The World Is Competing: This was not mentioned in the video but the world is now a global village. Every country worth its salt knows that to grow it must attract the best and brightest minds and ensure they feel fulfilled within that country. Canada has competitors in the immigration marketplace.

Can We To Inspire People Like Before

I think it is possible to get people to fall in love with Canada again to the extent that they want their Canadian citizenship, and nothing will stop them from claiming their coveted prize.

Those working in the services must try to make sure immigrants do not fall through the cracks within the first 3 years of being in Canada. There must be a strong outreach to help the new immigrant settle into the Canadian lifestyle as painlessly as possible.

I love Canada, and if you really got to know her, you would love her too!
